Bungay Civic Awards 2022

In October Bungay was finally able to hold its first Civic Awards since 2019. The event was held in St Mary’s Church and was presented by the Mayor Tony Dawes and Councillor Mick Lincoln. The awards recognise outstanding contribution to Bungay and were presented in front of mayors of nearby towns and members of organisations within the town.

Awards presented were:

The Bezant Cup, presented to the person who has made the largest contribution to sport in Bungay or the Bungay resident who has made the largest contribution to a particular sport or sports in Bungay or elsewhere. This went to Marilyn Fuller of Bungay & District Sport Association. Marilyn has supported Bungay Sports tirelessly both as secretary and also running the refreshment facilities at the sports pavilion for over 20 years including Saturdays for the football teams and cricket teas during the summer.  Her efforts have been crucial to ensure clubs remain financially sustainable and refreshed.

The Madeleine Parr Long Service Community Award (The Mayor’s Award) was presented to Martin Evans in recognition of his outstanding, long-term support to the town and its community. Martin has served as Mayor, Reeve and contributed years of service to many groups in the town

The New Community Group Award was presented to new group Bungay Community Support who has made a significant effort to enhance the well-being of the town and its community.  During Covid they provided emergency support and provided marvellous support wherever it was needed. They now continue this support and have moved on to providing warm rooms and the baby bank. The award was accepted by Sue Collins, Chair of Trustees.

The Bungay Civic Award recognises exceptional community service in Bungay. In July we lost a much-loved and highly regarded member of our community Lucinda Walker. Lucy was a prominent member of BEBA, the mainstay of Bungay Christmas Lights and worked with councillors on projects including the East Suffolk Towns Initiative and the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The award was presented posthumously to Lucy and accepted by her husband, James.
